Some Thoughts on Baptism

Epiphany

Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord.   In his homily that morning, Fr. Barry spoke about the nature and purpose of baptism in the life of a Christian–urging us to remember that baptism is the beginning of our new life in Christ.

He also argued against the secular notion that baptism is merely a symbolic ritual or archaic cultural expression.  Rather, it is a sacrament made efficacious by the power of the Holy Spirit. In baptism we share in the death and resurrection of Christ, are cleansed of the stain of our sins, and deeply and ontologically united to the Holy Trinity.
